Water Meter Repair
Need help repairing a faulty water meter?
If you’re a property owner, chances are you’ve encountered a plumbing problem or two. Water meters are not an exemption. They can become faulty, have leaks, or have a host of other issues that could cost you a lot of money when ignored. Understanding what it is and its function in your property can help you handle a repair situation should you come across one.
What is a water meter?
A water meter is a device installed on a property to record water consumption. This data will be the basis of how much you are charged on your water bill. As the meter tap controls the water supply to your property, you, as a property owner, are able to turn it off and on depending on your requirements.
What are common water meter issues?
Here are some of the more common water meter issues you may encounter and how to address them:
- Water meter leak.
Water leaks are very common and oftentimes left undetected. A sudden increase in your water bill is usually a good indication.
Your meter will most likely have a leak gauge. If you suspect a water leak, perform the following steps:
- Shut off all taps and make sure no appliances such as a dishwasher or washing machine are currently being used.
- Check the leak triangle on your meter. Keep all taps off and do not use water for about 20 minutes. Check the triangle again.
- If the triangle has moved from its original position, you have a leak.
How to repair a water meter leak?
Dealing with a water meter leak depends on where they are located. If the leak is somewhere between the plumbing elbow and your property, it is your responsibility. If it appears between the elbow and the roadside, you should call your local water company.
If the leak is in your area of responsibility, while it is tempting to address the issue on your own, it will be better for you (and your wallet) in the long run if you call a
licenced plumber to fix your meter.
- Water meter damage through maintenance work or run over by a vehicle.
No matter how careful we are, accidents can happen sometimes. When you’ve caused damage to your meter while doing garden work, or property renovations, don’t panic. Knowing what to do in these situations is critical to prevent further damage and additional costs. Call your local plumber and have the damage assessed. Licenced water meter repair technicians and plumbers will be able to help you.
- The water meter is producing loud, unusual noises
Water meters and pipes produce sounds, and it’s not at all unusual. But if the sounds are becoming louder or more frequent, it would be good to have it checked just to be sure. There are a number of reasons that could cause a noisy water meter. Sometimes, incorrectly fitted pipes could become loose and make loud noises when taps are used. Some older meters will have a ticking sound too while the water is running.
To make sure that the noise is not something you should be worried about, contact an expert. Your local plumber will be able to tell you if your meter needs repair or replacement.
- Other water meter issues
A water meter does not break easily. A common reason for meters breaking is old age, but there are cases when external elements contribute to its wear and tear. If your meter has become foggy or unreadable, you can try wiping it gently with a cloth. If that doesn’t solve the problem, lightly tap on the side to disturb the condensation. If this doesn’t work, seek the help of your local licenced plumber.
Water meter repair costs
The cost of repair will depend on the extent and cause of the damage, and the accessibility of your pipes. A plumbing expert will be able to tell you if the meter is worth repairing or if it needs to be replaced.
