How to Set the Right Water Pressure for Your Home

water pressure

Getting inconsistent water pressure is one of the things you will encounter as a homeowner. Many people do not see the importance of having the right water pressure in your home, which is why it is often overlooked until it’s too late. While having high water pressure is great, there are a few reasons why you should consider lowering your setting to avoid plumbing issues.

Possible causes of low hot water pressure

Burst Pipes

Strong water pressure is often the cause of burst pipes. This could happen, especially if you use low-quality pipes or if your house is old. Consistent high-pressure water running through your pipes can cause them to break.

Increased Water Bill

More water consumption means an increase in the water bill. It's as simple as that. High water pressure means more water being consumed by the household than is necessary.

Less Water Flow

High-pressure water in your bathroom will affect all others in the household. Since there is more demand for the drains in your bath, there is less water flow on other sinks, such as the one in your kitchen.

Leaking Pipes

When the water pressure is set too high, this later damages the structure of your drains. In this case, it is more likely that you will experience leaking pipes later on. When this happens, it not only wastes water but also increases your water bill.

Water Loss

The worst-case scenario is complete water loss. High water pressure may have affected some of your drains or your entire water supply, and all of your taps no longer run any water.

How to Adjust Your Water Pressure

Check your home’s water pressure

The ideal water pressure in a home is around three to four bars. For residential plumbing, pipes can only withstand up to 500kpa. If your pressure is consistently going over 500kpa, you should make adjustments. If you want to check your water pressure manually, you can buy a water gauge from home improvement stores. You would simply attach the device to your taps, and you’ll be able to identify the pressure once the water starts running.

Adjust the pressure-reducing valve

If the water pressure is too high, you can adjust the PRV or pressure-reducing valve. It should be found near your water’s main shut-off. If you don’t have one yet, it’s best to have a PRV installed in the first place. Fortunately, there are plenty of plumbers in Lake Macquarie and Newcastle who can help with any plumbing installation.

Call the town’s water supplier

Perhaps there is nothing wrong with your water pressure levels. After checking all the pipes and settings, you might want to call your local water supplier to see if any water disruptions are going on.
