How to Clear Clogs in Galvanised Pipes with Six Easy Steps

Cleaning Galvanised Pipes

Galvanised pipes are the most common type of drains, especially for older home models. They are not only known for their durability but also for withstanding various conditions for a prolonged period. These pipes are primarily made of steel and coated with a silver or white finish.

Galvanised pipes are the go-to option for long-term use. Its premium coating makes these pipes susceptible to corrosion. However, all things deteriorate after a very long time. Galvanised pipes are no exception.

After so many years of having these pipes in your home, it might start to rust. This condition would later result in
clogging. Because of corrosion, rust roughens the walls, and objects start to get stuck on the inside.

The best way to deal with clogging pipes is to ask for a plumber to fix it for you. Jet Blaster Man has the experts you need for the task and better: for an affordable price. We have a 24/7 emergency plumbing service in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

However, if you are looking for home solutions to do the cleaning, there are simple ways that you can do to clear the clogs in your galvanised pipes.

Step 1

Clear all the water in your sink, bathtub, and toilet bowl. You can use a small cup to scoop the water out. Make sure you have a bucket nearby where you can pour the water. If there is a stopper in your sink or bathtub, remove it to get full access to the drain opening.

Step 2

Boil about one litre of water and pour it into the drain. Wait for it to rise to two inches. For most galvanised pipes, you might need to pour the hot water all the way down the drain.

Step 3

Make sure that the opening is free from any obstruction to start the plunging. Choose a type of plunger that is suitable for the drain. For example, if you are dealing with the toilet, you might need a ball plunger. You can also choose smaller plungers for sinks and bathtubs. Either way, a ball plunger works best as it vacuums the pipes and pushes any object in the drain effectively.

Move the plunger downward and upward to push the water forcefully. Such pressure will force the object out of the way until it doesn't clog anymore.

Step 4

You need to continue plunging to make sure your drains are completely unclogged. Do the same steps over again. Pour hot water and work on the plunger. For toilet pipes, you might need a larger amount of water.  If you can see that water is already draining normally, then you have successfully cleared your pipes. If the clogging doesn't get solved, then you should proceed to the next step.

Step 5

Find a chemical-based drain cleaner. Check its instructions and pour it down the drain. Bauxite or caustic soda is the recommended component you should look for in the drain cleaner.

Step 6

After pouring the chemical, rinse the drain by running hot water. You can simply flush when it comes to your toilet.
