Easy Steps to Disinfect Sink Drains

Your kitchen sink is dirtier than you might think.

The sink is constantly wet and moist, which is a great place for bacteria to thrive. And because the kitchen is the place where you prepare your food, it is best practice to disinfect the area regularly, especially your sink.

There are a few common household items that you can use to help you
disinfect your sink drains effectively, and we’ve listed some of them below.

1. Bleach

Bleach is commonly used to remove stains on clothes and get rid of mould that grows in your bathroom (among other things). Some homeowners try to avoid using it because of its strong odour, but this chemical is very effective at killing germs. It is pretty potent, so you’ll have to handle it with caution. Wearing gloves and putting on a mask is essential.

To use bleach when disinfecting your sink, first prep the area by pouring lukewarm water all over it. Add in the bleach and let it sit for a few minutes. You can also use a piece of cloth to sanitise the surface around the sink, such as the tap and counter. Once done, you can thoroughly rinse away the bleach with lukewarm water.

2. Baking Soda And Vinegar

If you want something that doesn’t smell as offensive, you can opt for the good ol’ baking soda and vinegar combo. This method never gets old and is still proven to be very effective. When combined, baking soda and vinegar create a reaction so intense that it doesn’t only take out the germs but also dislodges the grime and mould stuck to your drains.

To use, first put a sufficient amount of baking soda into the pipes, followed by an equal quantity of vinegar. Leave it for a few minutes. You can use the same composition to clean the surfaces. Rinse the drain by pouring hot water.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen Peroxide sometimes gets a bad wrap for being too harsh an antiseptic. At high concentrations, they can be irritating to the skin and the eyes. But when handled properly, it’s useful as a cleaning agent around the house.

When using hydrogen peroxide when cleaning the sink, it’s best to use at least 3% concentration. What's convenient about this
plumbing maintenance method is that you can leave the mixture as it is until it dries naturally.
